I'm sure you've both provided, and told users, a way to change our initially assigned passwords, but I don't seem to find it anywhere. What's the answer? I ask in the spirit of promoting your priority "to keep On the Record fast, simple and easy to use." Having a password I can remember would help achieve all three.

Normally I do not agree with Nick but this time I do.

To change your password:
Where it says "Welcome, (your name)" click on your name, which will open your profile. Click "Edit" and you'll find the option to change your password.

Is there any way to add basic HTML functionality to this site, such as [x]...[/x] for using quotes, italics and the like?

Below the reply box, it says what code/markups are allowed:
Allowed markup: a blockquote code em strong ul ol li.
You can also put code in between backtick ( ` ) characters.Posted 2 years ago # -
Here's a somewhat-brief reference for HTML markups if you're not familiar with the various markups allowed.

Oops! My bad. I missed the
Allowed Markupnote there. Thanks.Posted 2 years ago # -
It seems the terms of use for this forum are strikingly similar, if not identical, to those governing the main page of the PC. I just don't see how this forum will succeed if there is not some greater incentive to register here and gain privileges beyond those granted on the main page.

Although now having posted, I see we have the option to edit here, which is a very welcome difference. I hate not being able to correct my misspellings. :)

Scott: We're not sure what you mean by "privileges." The only real distinction between this and the main site is that posts here are not anonymous. The incentive is that ideally, the commentary here will be more...shall we say... "mature" if posters have to use their real identities. Whether that proves to be true remains to be seen ;-)
As for the ability to edit, FYI, that ability only lasts for a short time after you post, it doesn't remain there indefinitely.

I don’t see that “on the-Record” is directly linked under the web addition of the Press-Citizen. Is it?
What I do see are anonymous comments; some of which are akin to the scrawling that vandals leave on an outhouse wall. I believe if people have a choice, between reading and posting by name or anonymously, more will post by name and stop giving any weight to the graffiti.

Other forums allow you to receive email notifications when something happens on a particular thread. Is it possible to turn something like that on for this forum so I know when someone has replied to a comment that I've made?

Eric:
We will look into it and see if we can adopt something. I can't make any promises, as we don't want to get too bogged down in technical stuff here, but that would definitely be a good feature.

I think this real-name-only forum is a great idea. I have one suggestion, though: on the "Latest Discussions" page, I don't think you should have the column for "Last Poster." I think it will make people less likely to comment on multiple threads, since it will suddenly look like they are dominating the forum. Also, it means a person's name will appear prominently next to a statement that he or she doesn't necessarily agree with. For example, if someone were to defend Chuck Grassley in response to Ellen Ballas's criticisms, that person's name would appear right next to the title "Voters, beware of Grassley," which would be easy for a casual reader to misinterpret.

I really like the idea behind On The Record. But today alone there were over a hundred anonymous comments on various articles, while there was only one comment posted in On The Record. I doubt the real-namers will ever outnumber the anonymous commenters, but I do think there are ways to design the On The Record system that would encourage more participation.
In particular, I agree with previous commenters here that there should be an On The Record thread created automatically for every article in the P-C, just like there is for anonymous comments. As it is, people are naturally going to look at the anonymous comments after reading an article, but are much less likely to click the link to On The Record on the off chance that someone there might also have started a thread. I'm afraid that On The Record is doomed to be inconsequential, and to remain in the shadow of the anonymous comments, unless every article gets a thread.

Good idea to have the same articles from PC also posted here.
Good idea not to have the last poster's name on there.
(It can appear as if it's a contest for "the last word," which can often kill a discussion.)Good idea to receive notification of a response to a comment.
Suggestion: the ability to search the various threads by poster's name.

Get rid of the anonymous comment section.

why can't there be a spot on the regular home page that highlights "on the record" and maybe has the top 5 most recented commented stories listed under it.
You don't have to be registered to read it even if you have to be registered to comment...wouldn't that increase the traffic and maybe the people willing to voice thier opinions?
Right now it is an off shoot that people may or may not think about.

Good point Joyce. I also think it might help to have a promo spot on the side bars of the opinion pages.
